GYNECOLOGIC SURGERY
LAPAROSCOPY
What is Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure where 1 to 3 tiny incisions are made on a woman’s lower belly. Surgical instruments no wider than a chopstick are then inserted in order to perform the procedure. Laparoscopy is used to treat abdominal gynecologic problems such as fibroids, infertility, ovarian cysts, scar tissues, Endometriosis and more.
What is the average length of time of a Laparoscopy procedure?
The average length of a laparoscopy procedure is between 1 to 2 hours. An additional hour is spent afterward in our recovery room, where a Registered Nurse will make sure your needs are fully met.
Is there an overnight hospital stay after the procedure?
No, one of the benefits of laparoscopy is that it is a same day procedure with low complication rates and fast recovery.
What type of anesthesia is used for Laparoscopy surgery?
We perform this procedure under General Anesthesia. You will be asleep during the procedure and will awaken within minutes after the surgery is completed.
Anesthesia services are provided by board certified anesthesiologists.
What is the postoperative period like?
You may experience discomfort at the surgical site for the first few days, after which it should diminish and go away. We always send patients home with prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics so they can rest in comfort. Full healing takes approximately two weeks.
When can I return to work post laparoscopy surgery?
Most patients are able to return to work within two days after surgery. For your convenience, we can also provide general and discrete medical excuse letters for work.
When can I resume exercise post laparoscopy surgery?
We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for at least two weeks.
Does insurance cover the cost of laparoscopy surgery?
Insurance usually does cover this procedure because it is considered medically necessary.
